Beware fake relatives' calls for cash

If someone claiming to be a relative asks you to wire money for an emergency, be suspicious. Scammers have already bilked 'grandparents' for more than $3.5 million.

I just got a call from someone claiming to be my granddaughter. She said she was in Montreal and had been in a car accident. She said her credit card wasn't working in Canada. She asked me if I could send her $4,000 by Western Union so she could get her car fixed and get home. She promised to pay it back as soon as she could.

I asked her where her husband was, and she said he didn't go with her. She didn't want to tell him she'd been in an accident. When I asked if her parents knew about it, she said she didn't want to tell them yet either.

I said I didn't have $4,000 but could send her $1,000. She said that would be OK.

This is the same old story but I feel it bears repeating this time of year especially. Some of us seniors have many grandchildren far and wide and keeping up with their names is sometimes difficult.

When some relative calls and says they are in need of money for car repairs or illness, we want to help them out by sending them money.

However, we need to be more vigilant in finding out more about the person calling so we don't get taken. I'm not in the habit of giving info out to someone on the phone. But I can see how that could happen and feel this article has some good thoughts on this.

Has anything like this every happened to you?

If someone purporting to be my grandchild calls for money, I will die laughing -- I don't have any grandchildren. I think these disgusting scams are directed at seniors because so many of us don't like to admit that we forget things like names. Personally, I would much rather make sure it was a relative before I fork over any cash. Then again, I have so few living relatives that it is an easy task to verify their identity. When their voices sound odd, I am well known for throwing out our "secret questions" to make sure it's them. So far, no one has ever tried to impersonate the few family members I have.

Good article, Soovivers, and I hope it saves someone from the heartache and loss of cash these scammers are after.

Thanks Penni - I hope so too and thought the article deserved another review.

Hi Soovivers, I have been missing you! So I thought I'd come over and say hi. Good article on scams. I used to think that no one could steal my identity, and take from my accounts as they are on empty most of the time.

I discovered that someone can crank up a lot of money on a persons name, and that would be devastating for anyone. We have to be so careful these days about such awful things as that.

Fortunately I do not answer my telephone, unless I know who is calling on the other end by caller ID.

It is a good thing to stay aware of what some people are capable of and be on our guard. The world has sure changed a lot since we were growing up.

Identity theft - hmmm, didn't think it would happen here either but recently someone had charged almost 1000.00 to my hubbys cc. Also had gone into his Walmart account and put a bunch of stuff in the basket. Thankfully the cc people turned it down since it wasn't a normal transaction for him.

It has been a long time since I've seen you Dawny. Have you been busy? I've been a little busy and also visitng my friends the Drs. lols My bp was outta control but the good ol Dr put me on a whole lotta meds to fix it. Yuck!

Thanks so much for stopping by - I hope you and your family have a great Christmas!

Soovivers, Hi I am so sorry to hear that you were a victim, but glad that the cc company didn't allow it.

I am also so glad you got your bp under control. We also have a cocktail of meds. Interesting how these things happen as we get older, and we're so young at heart.

I have been pretty busy as my house had to be assessed for a refi, and of course all of the paperwork that goes with that. We were on a five year ARM mortgage. We now have an extended mortgage that does not have to be refinanced again.

You talk about scams, that refi and closing cost is killer. Especially after paying on our home for the past 15 years, at the same bank. I am sure we have paid it off at least twice already, because of interest.

We really had a big snowstorm (blizzard) for three days. Did you get in on that big storm, out there?

We have been having fun this winter, getting together with all of our friends and our kids. The youngest of the 14 grandkids, my baby, baby just turned four. He had a great party at Chucky Cheese. I took lots of pictures. They grow up so fast!

Fortunately for us, my husband has been working lots of hours, but he is very tired.

I hope you are finding some fun, as well, besides the doctoring. We both know what that is about.

I didn't mean to hijack your article, but it all goes with the years going by, for those who are not there yet. Just so happy to keep in touch with you.

We wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas season! I let my kids do the entertaining, now, and just sit back and enjoy them.

Sooves,

Don't feel bad about what happened. You were your usual good self and someone took advantage of it. But it is an excellent example of how careful we have to be in this modern age of faceless transactions. I know a $1000 dollars is a lot of money to loose to learn a lesson, but just remember, you did it because your a good person, and that is worth it.

Thanks Perrie - that was a nice thing to say and I appreciate it. I'm glad you came and checked out my seed. I have had a real busy month so I haven't been on here much this month as far as writing.

Take care and have a great holiday Perrie!

These types have no soul and are nothing but pure evil. It is horribly wrong to take advantage of the elderly just to make a buck.

I am now getting a lot of email scams ....thankfully everything is routed to a spam folder that I only scan subject line then delete.

It is pathetic that these people normally never get caught.

I have a lot of security on my PC and seldom get anything on line that is a scam - I guess one is all it takes though! Thanks MoCow.

The only people who call me for money are bill collectors and friends. Have quit answering my phone. :)

River- I don't answer mine much either if I'm not expecting a call. Seems like it's a recording or someone trying to sell something or some one else I don't want to talk to. I'm getting to where I don't even like phones anymore.

Soovivers, Hi, I still have dial up Internet which is a pain, but at least the phone does not ring while I am on it.

When the phone rings it sets up an anxiety of "who wants what" on the other end. I still like the mail, though, because even through the bills come in the mailbox, the mailbox does not ask me for anything. I am always looking forward to that unexpected "check in the mail." lol

Now that everything is direct deposit, that's not likely to happen, unless of course it is from a car dealership, with a whopping $1000 to buy a new car! Like that is going to happen!

Even though I pay the majority of my bills online, I still need that paperwork, to pile up in my desk cubby, because it makes me feel more secure. What if my computer went out?

Have great day!

I agree Dawny - Even though I don't need all of the papers I keep it seems as if I have as much as before when I paid through the mail. Just something about having that piece of paper when I need to show that I paid a bill.

I let my calls go to my machine generally, but I also have call reporting online through my internet provider. It immediately shows who called. It's not an extra cost either. If it was I wouldn't have it. And anymore the recordings that we all get on the phone - well it's crazy!

Thanks Dawn for stopping by..
